Every year on September 21st, Christians around the world celebrate the Feast of St. Matthew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. But who was Matthew, and why is his story so compelling?
From Publican to Disciple
Matthew, also known as Levi, was a tax collector in Capernaum when Jesus called him to become a disciple. In those times, tax collectors were often viewed with contempt, considered collaborators with the Roman oppressors. Yet, Jesus saw beyond societal judgments, inviting Matthew to follow Him.
The Gospel According to Matthew
Matthew's experience as a tax collector likely contributed to his meticulous nature, evident in his Gospel.
The Gospel of Matthew, the first book of the New Testament, provides a comprehensive account of Jesus' life and teachings, with a particular focus on fulfilling Old Testament prophecies.
Patron Saint and Symbol
St. Matthew is the patron saint of bankers, accountants, and tax collectors - a nod to his former profession. He's often symbolized by a winged man, representing the human aspect of Christ that his Gospel emphasizes.
Celebrating St. Matthew Today
The Feast of St. Matthew is a time for reflection on themes of calling, transformation, and discipleship. Many churches hold special services, and it's a day for those in financial professions to seek his intercession.
In homes and offices worldwide, people honor St. Matthew with prayers, charitable acts, and even through beautiful religious art, like the exquisite crystal figurines from AB Crystal Collection.
A Timeless Message
St. Matthew's story reminds us that everyone, regardless of their past or profession, can be called to a higher purpose. His journey from tax collector to apostle exemplifies the transformative power of faith and the unexpected ways in which the divine can work in our lives.
As we celebrate St. Matthew, let's remember that change is possible, redemption is available, and that sometimes, the most extraordinary journeys begin with a simple invitation to "Follow me."
Whether you're marking this day with prayer, reflection, or by adorning your space with a beautiful St. Matthew crystal figurine, may the spirit of transformation and faith inspire your own journey.
